South Carolina-based club becomes the 19th W League club

COLUMBIA, S.C.- The United Soccer League (USL) today announced South Carolina United FC as the latest club to join the USL W League. South Carolina United FC, a member of the USL League Two men’s league, will field a women's senior team in the USL W League in 2022 and become the second W League team out of South Carolina.

“We are excited to be joining the USL W League,” said Rob Strickland, Executive Director of South Carolina United FC. “Our club strives to provide opportunities for all our members regardless of gender. This announcement again reaffirms our commitment to those values. It’s a great day for the players of Columbia and the midlands of South Carolina.”

As a long-standing member of the USL, South Carolina United FC has proven to be a top class club for player development. Through professionalism in leadership and quality coaching, the club fields teams that compete in all levels of soccer from youth to pre-professional. By joining the USL W League, the South Carolina-based club will continue to offer a senior team platform on the women’s side, building on its history of success in the women’s game.

“We are excited to officially welcome South Carolina United FC to the USL W League,” said Betsy Haugh, USL W League Director of Operations. “SC United is a tremendous addition to the league as we continue building out our footprint in the South Atlantic region, and we look forward to working with them on our shared goal of providing more opportunities in the sport of soccer.”

The club prides itself on fostering an atmosphere in which the good of the whole is valued as well as the needs of the individual. Through its dedication to player development and the Columbia community, the club hopes to instill a passion for the sport of soccer that unites its players with its community members, creating a best in class environment both on and off the pitch.

The addition of a senior women’s team in the USL W League will not only impact South Carolina United’s ability to continue to offer opportunities for athletes to pursue pre-professional careers in soccer, but also allow the club to maintain its reputation of producing homegrown talent all within the USL ecosystem.
