United Soccer League Welcomes Kalamazoo FC to the USL W League

Michigan-based club set to begin play in women’s pre-professional league in 2022

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The United Soccer League (USL) today announced Kalamazoo FC as the latest club to join the USL W League. The Michigan-based club will compete in the W League’s inaugural season in 2022.

“Simply put, we are thrilled to continue growing the game,” said Dave Shufelt, Owner of Kalamazoo FC. “Promoting and furthermore assisting the building of gender equity in the game is something that has been pivotal to our plans as a club. We are thankful for the opportunity from the USL to provide a platform that we feel can flourish, and even more so for our community supporting us in this mission. There is a long way to go in the growth of the game and we are confident in the staff we have brought on and their ability to lead an amazing program on an amazing mission.” 

Founded in 2016, Kalamazoo FC is a premiere development destination for athletes in Kalamazoo and its surrounding cities. The club’s mission to grow the game through progression-focused training has become the driving force behind its success as a community outlet and competition platform. With the support of its eclectic fans, Kalamazoo provides its players competitive soccer programming in a forward-driven environment that thrives off of the spirit of giving back to its community.

The seven-year organization  is committed to enhancing diversity and inclusion in all aspects of its club. In joining the W League, Kalamazoo will establish a commitment to the growth of all athletes in the community by providing equitable opportunities in its pre-professional platforms. The club will offer its players a direct pathway to the professional game through the USL’s burgeoning youth to pro model. 

“Kalamazoo FC will be a strong addition to the W League for its inaugural season in 2022,” said Betsy Haugh, USL Director of Women’s Soccer Operations. “We have seen continuous growth in the state of Michigan and a true investment in providing opportunities in the women’s game. By joining the W League, Kalamazoo FC will further that investment and solidify a pathway to the next level.”
