Four marquee matchups headline the USL W League quarterfinals

The 2022 USL W League Playoffs kick off on Wednesday night with eight teams aiming for a place in the inaugural W League Final. Here’s a look at the four Quarterfinals that will get the postseason underway.

Quarterfinal Match Previews

Morris Elite SC vs. McLean Soccer, 7:30 p.m., Rutgers Newark

 

Morris Elite SC will welcome McLean Soccer to Rutgers Newark for the midweek matchup slated to kick off at 7:30 pm.   

Morris Elite SC (8-1-3) secured its playoff spot during the last weekend of regular season play, when it clinched the Metropolitan Division with a stoppage-time game-winner scored by Bridget Dudziec against Queensboro FC. Team-leading scorers Lauren Wrigley and Katie Coyle, who have seven goals apiece, look to be the difference to propel the team to a deep playoff run.  

McLean Soccer was the first team to secure a playoff berth, winning the Mid Atlantic Division after recording eight consecutive wins in start the season. That run included six consecutive shutouts, with the side having conceded six goals in 10 regular season games. McLean’s attacking duo, recent U.S. Youth National Team call up Makenna Morris and Aleigh Gambone, each have seven goals on the season.  

Minnesota Aurora FC vs. Indy Eleven, 8 p.m., TCO Stadium

 

Indy Eleven will travel to Eagan, Minnesota to face Minnesota Aurora FC at TCO Stadium in the lone matchup between teams that went undefeated in the regular season this round. Kick off  is set for 8 p.m. ET. 

Indy Eleven started the season off with a bang when the club hosted the inaugural W League match on May 6, taking a 3-1 victory against Kings Hammer FC. That set the tone for Indy’s season, in which the club went undefeated with a record of 10-0-2. Indy’s goalscoring duo Katie Soderstrom and Maddy Williams accounted for 21 of the club’s 31 goals and will look to continue their goal-scoring form against Minnesota’s staunch defense.  

Minnesota Aurora FC (11-0-1) was held to a draw in its sold-out opening match, but since has rattled off 11 consecutive victories, outscoring opponents 35-8 over the course of the regular season. Morgan Turner and Morgan Stone lead the way for the Aurora in goals scored with five and seven respectively.

FC Miami City vs. South Georgia Tormenta FC, 6 p.m., Tropical Park

 

A southern match-up between FC Miami City and South Georgia Tormenta FC will kick off at 6 p.m. ET in Miami at Tropical Park. 

Miami City is the third of three unbeaten teams heading into the playoffs, going 9-0-1 in the regular season. The side outscored its opponents 21-4, led by Claudia Rodriguez with six goals. Miami started out the season with a win in Tropical Park and are now looking to earn a seventh win in a row. 

Tormenta FC clinched one of the last playoff spots on the final weekend of the regular season with an 8-0 win against South Carolina United FC. The league’s leading scorer Amy Andrews finished with a brace, bringing her season total to 16 goals. The team finished 7-1-4 at the top of the South Central Division and finished out the regular season on a six-game unbeaten streak. 

Greenville Liberty SC vs. Long Island Rough Riders, 7 p.m., Legacy Early College

 

Greenville Liberty will host the Long Island Rough Riders at 7 p.m. ET in their home stadium at Legacy Early College. 

Greenville finished at the top of the South Atlantic Division, going 8-2-2 in the regular season. Liberty SC was led by forward Caroline Conti, who finished with nine goals and four assists, and goalkeeper Katelyn Kellogg, who ended the season with 33 saves. Greenville won every home game this year and will use that as motivation to bounce back after suffering defeats in its final two games of the regular season. 

The Rough Riders (8-2-2) come into the playoffs as the solo wild card team, finishing second to Morris Elite SC in the Metropolitan Division. Long Island secured the final berth in the postseason with a 7-0 win against the Westchester Flames on Sunday, leaving no doubt with six first-half goals. The team will rely on Nicole Bermudez, who tallied 10 goals and an assist this season, to lead the way against Greenville.
