STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC on Wednesday announced its intention to play the inaugural match at Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium on Oct. 1, 2022, against the Richmond Kickers.

Tormenta FC will play its final home match of the regular season against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC on Oct. 15 at Tormenta Stadium. Additionally, Tormenta FC will be able to play any home games in the 2022 USL League One Playoffs at Tormenta Stadium.

The opening of Tormenta Stadium is a watershed moment for the City of Statesboro and South Georgia. Tormenta Stadium, which will become a premier soccer-specific venue in the state of Georgia upon its completion, will create jobs and economic activity and spur greater business and growth in Statesboro and the surrounding region.

Tormenta Stadium will also serve as a concert venue while having the capacity to host other outdoor events. The club has made strides toward growing the game of soccer locally and making Statesboro the entertainment destination in South Georgia and the Lowcountry of South Carolina.

As the stadium construction process continues, fans and followers of the club can expect the state-of-the-art facility in Statesboro to feature luxury suites, a multi-functional gym for players, a restaurant and craft brewery developed by the local Eagle Creek Brewery, and a team merchandise store to go along with a final capacity of 5,300 spectators.

In addition to League One matches, Tormenta Stadium will host Tormenta FC’s USL W League, USL League Two and USL Academy teams along with both the Georgia Southern University Men’s and Women’s NCAA Division I soccer teams.

Tormenta Stadium becomes one of five current stadium projects that are under construction in the USL Championship and USL League One, including one for a future USL Championship club in Des Moines, Iowa. There are another 11 stadium projects approved or in development across the Championship and League One, following clubs such as Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, Louisville City FC, Monterey Bay F.C. and Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, whose new homes have opened in recent years.
