Austin-based team looks to create opportunities for women both on and off the field

Austin, Texas - The United Soccer League today announced ATX Women’s Soccer as the W League’s first club in the state of Texas. The club will take the field in 2024.

“As a group of friends who grew up in Austin, we’re thrilled to bring more women’s soccer to our hometown,” said Saara Hassoun, Co-Founder and Team President, an Austinite who conducts research at Harvard on athlete wellbeing. “We’re also pioneering a unique kind of club structure, with a focus on supporting the next generation of soccer leaders on and off the field. We can’t wait to kick off in 2024 and to expand the pipeline for women in soccer front offices.”

The Austin, Texas–based club will launch in partnership with a new nonprofit, the Front Office Development Program, with the mission of helping players develop both as athletes and as sports management professionals. The club’s novel structure reflects its key values of being purpose-driven, people-powered, and player-centric.

“Welcoming ATX Women’s Soccer as the W League’s first expansion club in Texas is a further testament to the commitment the USL has to growing the league’s national footprint,” said Amanda Vandervort, USL Super League and W League President. “We are inspired by the club’s dedication to supporting female player development on and off the field, as well as the team's commitment to their community.”

Austin’s official branding and logo will be a central piece of the club’s story — a story the club wants to write alongside their supporters in Austin and around the country. ATX Women’s Soccer will give community members the opportunity to name the club, help decide the brand identity, and be involved with the club’s overall direction.

The team’s participation in the 2024 W League season is contingent on the formation of a new division, which will feature at least five new teams.

The new club will celebrate its launch by co-hosting the Night Before Party with the American Outlaws on Friday, April 7 at 7PM at Haymaker ahead of the USWNT playing Ireland in Austin on Saturday. They will also have a booth at the US Soccer Fan Fest at Q2 Stadium on Saturday before the match, where fans can learn about the club, enjoy free swag, and sign up for season tickets.
