Gomes returns to national duty after standout season for SF Glens, recording 16 goals and eight assists

San Francisco Glens SC forward Nadia Gomes has been called up to the Portugal Women’s National Team for the upcoming inaugural edition of the UEFA Women’s Nations League, which kicks off its group stage week. Gomes’ selection comes after earning the USL W League’s 2022 Player of the Year award in August.

Drawn into in Group 2 of League A, Portugal will start by facing France on Friday, September 22 at the Stade du Hainaut, in the city of Valenciennes. The team will then host Norway at the Cidade de Barcelos Stadium on Tuesday, September 26.

“Words cannot express how thrilled we are for Nádia to get this much-deserved call-up to the Portuguese National Team,” said SF Glens executive Ryan Maquiñana. “To climb the mountain and make it back to this level after being away from the sport for five years is a testament to her dedication and talent. We’re thankful she had such a great platform in the USL W League for her to stage this comeback.”

During the 2023 W League season, the Viseu, Portugal native was borderline unstoppable, scoring 16 goals and recording eight assists for the Glens. Her goalscoring and on-field leadership helped the team be crowned Western Conference champions and to an appearance in the W League Semifinals in the club’s inaugural season. Additionally, the Glens sat atop the Power Rankings for five consecutive weeks during the regular season.

Gomes played collegiately at BYU, where in 2015 she earned WCC Player of the Year and NSCAA All-America Third Team honors. In addition, Gomes has represented Portugal at the U-19 and senior levels, making her last appearance for the senior national team at the Algarve Cup in 2018. Gomes was selected by the Orlando Pride in the 2018 National Women’s Soccer League Draft and subsequently signed as a National Team Replacement Player.

During the past regular season with the Glens, Gomes earned W League Team of the Month honors in June. After the conclusion of the season, she was selected as the NorCal Divisional Player of the Year and also named to the W League Team of the Year's First Team.
