The Athenians round out the newly formed Lone Star Division

TAMPA, Fla. - The United Soccer League today announced the addition of the San Antonio Athenians as the newest expansion team set to take the field in 2024.

“Aligned with our mission statement, we want to empower and inspire every member of our community, fostering a culture of unity, resilience, and excellence,” said Iban López Ares, Director of Women’s Soccer. “We want the club to represent the city of San Antonio, our folklore, our diversity and our Latin heritage. Joining the W League provides us the opportunity to be an important part of the women’s soccer pathway in the United States and allows players from the area to someday be a part of a pro-team in their city – as a player, executive, coach, referee, staff or fan.”

The San Antonio Athenians Soccer Club (SAASC) was founded in 2016. After a change in ownership prior to the 2021 season, SAASC moved to Soccer Central for home games and their practice fields.  Under this new ownership, the club takes pride in recruiting top players from the San Antonio area and beyond, including amateurs, collegiate, and future professional players.

SAASC has a long list of players who have gone on to become professional players and compete in countries such as the United States, Ireland, Mexico, Hungary and Spain.

“We are excited to welcome the San Antonio Athenians into the league,” said Amanda Vandervort, USL W League and Super League President. “Rounding out our new Lone Star Division, the Athenians will create more opportunities for players and coaches in the San Antonio area.”

The club’s mission is to empower and inspire every member of our women's soccer team while fostering a culture of unity, resilience, and excellence both on and off the field. The club is dedicated to developing not only skilled and competitive athletes but also confident, compassionate, and resilient individuals.
