Will the Cargo continue its strong start? Knoxville, VBU, and Kalamazoo poised for debut

The 2025 USL W League season is starting to pick up with eight matches this weekend, but these are the four we will have our eyes on!

Tune in to SE Play to catch all the action.

5/10; 4 p.m. ET - One Knoxville vs. Asheville City SC

One Knoxville will kick off their inaugural W League season against league veteran Asheville City.

Ireland native Simon Duffy will lead the expansion side, headlined by University of Tennessee's starting goalkeeper Ally Zazzara. Zazzara will bring a load of experience to One Knox’s defense, after starting 16 matches for the Vols and ending the season with a .722 save percentage.

Coming off their first playoff appearance in 2024, Asheville City will look to recreate that magic this season with a handful of returners, and also a group of newcomers such as University of Kentucky goalkeeper Gaby Rouke, who previously completed with Florida Elite, and Sarah Gorham, who captained Lexington SC in 2023 and spent the last year playing professionally in Spain.

5/10; 6 p.m. ET - Richmond Ivy SC vs. Virginia Beach United FC

The 2024 Best New Crest winner Richmond Ivy SC will host newcomer Virginia Beach United FC in its home opener.

Last season, Richmond finished fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Division with a 6-5-1 record. And while their leading scorer Kanna Matsuhisa recently went pro and will not compete with the Ivy this season, the team has brought in new talent like Second Team All-SEC Auburn Tiger forward Olivia Woodson.

Virginia Beach United come into their first season with a blank canvas. Two of their signees are twin sisters from the University of Tennessee – Sydney and Skylar Miller. Both are heading into their sophomore season and will look to lead VBU to a successful first campaign.

5/10; 7 p.m. PT - Stockton Cargo SC vs. Olympic Club

Stockton Cargo is set to host the Olympic Club on Saturday night for the lone NorCal match of the night.

Stockton had a dream start to its 2025 season after defeating divisional rival Oakland Soul SC 3-1 last weekend. Hannah Diaz, who is competing in her second season for the Cargo, opened the scoring in the 34th minute, and teammates Samantha Tristian and Taylor Curtis secured the win with goals in the second half. Will Stockton be the NorCal team to beat?

Olympic Club will look to finish higher than the fifth seed it has claimed the past two seasons. With returners like Meredith Manley and Haley Nishimoto, the team should be posed to find the back of the net, but it's their defense that will need some bolstering after letting in 42 goals last season.

5/11; 4:30 p.m. ET - Union FC Macomb vs. Kalamazoo FC

Newcomers Union FC Macomb will look to immediately make a name for themselves against league vets Kalamazoo FC.

Union FC’s roster is full of full of high-level talent and USYNT players including Texas’ Amalia Villarreal, Penn State goalkeeper Kealey Titmuss and Notre Dame’s Morgan Roy. The club is high on the list for newcomers to watch this season.

Kalamazoo finished second in the Great Lakes Division last season, nine points behind first place Detroit City. The team will look to take care of unfinished business with a large group of returners headlined by forward Bailey Korhorn, who has scored 29 career goals in the W League.
