Former League champs face off, last year's semifinalists play inner-state newcomers

There’s another full slate of USL W League matches on the horizon as we head into the fourth weekend of the season. Here are four matches we’ll be watching in the coming days.

Tune in to SportsEngine Play to catch all the action.

5/23; 3:00 p.m. ET – NC Courage U23 vs. South Georgia Tormenta FC

For the first time, two W League champions will face off against each other this Friday. The reigning champs NC Courage U23 will host the inaugural champs South Georgia Tormenta in a South Atlantic matchup.

The Courage just opened its season with a win against North Carolina Fusion, while Tormenta (1-0-1) is also unbeaten through its first two games. This is the first of two matches this season between the two sides, so we’ll be tuned in to see if the visitors can end NC Courage’s winning streak dating back to last summer.

5/24 5:00 p.m. ET – Charlottesville Blues FC vs. Annapolis Blues FC

We’ll have our first W League Battle of the Blues this weekend when Charlottesville hosts newcomers Annapolis Blues FC on Saturday. Charlottesville struggled to earn results last season but has since moved to the Chesapeake Division and just battled Richmond Ivy to a hard-fought scoreless draw last week.

Meanwhile, Annapolis is entering the match coming off a 3-2 victory against Virginia Beach United for the Blues’ first W League win. University of Central Florida senior Payton Patrick and 2024 Big South Freshman of the Year Sabba Haghgoo got on the scoreboard to get the three points.

5/24 7:00 p.m. ET – Detroit City FC vs. Union FC Macomb

The 2024 Central Conference champions will return to Keyworth Stadium, where they went undefeated in the regular season last year, on Saturday for their home opener against expansion club Union FC Macomb.

Le Rouge didn’t get off to the start they wanted, falling 2-1 to current Great Lakes Division leaders AFC Ann Arbor. Now, they will have to face off against their new inner-city rival that just defeated Kalamazoo with goals by forwards Jenna Blackburn and Madison Slezinski.

5/25 6:00 p.m. CT – One Knoxville vs. Tennessee SC

Our newest team in the Volunteer State will take on last year’s National Semifinalist Tennessee SC in a Sunday evening matchup. One Knoxville just earned its first win of the season after 15-year-old Charleigh Freeman scored the game-winner in the 1-0 victory over Birmingham Legion.

Meanwhile, Tennessee SC started the summer on a high note with a 4-1 win against Greenville Liberty. The team has brought back many returners for the summer including two USYNT attackers, South Carolina’s Katie Shea Collins, who recorded a hat trick in the win, and Alabama’s Maddie Padelski.
