W League Team of the Month: June 2025

Nine divisions represented in final Team of the Month of the season

The USL W League announced its Team of the Month for June, celebrating the league’s top players for their incredible performances last month.  

Nine divisions are represented in the Team of the Month, with seven players selected for the bench.  Seven Castain was named Player of the Month after leading expansion side Utah United to the top of the Mountain Division and into the playoffs in its inaugural season. Sporting JAX’s Aaliyah Faddoul and FC Olympia’s Ginny Lackey were the only two players to make both May and June teams.

GK: Caroline Duffy, Annapolis Blues FC – The Oklahoma Sooner excelled in goal last month, recording six clean sheets for the Blues. Annapolis conceded just five goals this season behind Duffy, tied for second-fewest in the league. 

D: Megan Edelman, Santa Clarita Blue Heat FC – The Pepperdine defender held the line for three clean sheets and kept Santa Clarita undefeated all June, securing the team a spot in the playoffs. Edelman’s offensive skills also shined last month, as she scored an 89th minute goal for a 3-1 victory over AMSG FC.  

D: Charley Boone, Minnesota Aurora FC – Boone was a massive presence last month in one of the best defenses in the league. The Seattle native helped the team to six clean sheets, and Aurora finished the season with a league-fewest four goals conceded as it headed to its fourth consecutive playoff appearance. 

D: Maia Soulis, Detroit City FC - Soulis made five starts for Le Rouge last month, defending her side to help the team to five wins in June. The right back played all 90 minutes in the 3-1 victory over Kalamazoo on June 28 to clinch a playoff berth and win the Great Lakes Division.  

D: Abby Townsend, Kings Hammer FC Cincinnati - A dual threat for the Cincinnati side, Abby Townsend contributed to both ends of the field in all 10 of her starts this summer. She scored the game-winning goal against Racing Louisville on June 3, while also working on the backline to keep KHFC undefeated and earn its first playoff berth. 

M: Samantha DeGuzman, TLH Reckoning - The Virigina Tech Hokie has played all 10 matches for the Reckoning this season and scored three goals in June, including a brace in a 6-0 victory over Brevard SC. DeGuzman also played a defensive role from the midfield, helping the team to four clean sheets, most notably in the 1-0 win over Fort Lauderdale United to earn a wild card playoff berth.  

M: Sarah Gorham, Asheville City SC – Gorham started all seven matches in June for Asheville City, aiding her team to an undefeated season (11-0-1) and a South Central Division title. With Gorham’s strength in the midfield, Asheville finished its regular season on a ten-game winning streak.  

M: Vanessa Penuna, Stockton Cargo SC –The Fresno, CA native started all 12 matches for the Cargo this season and scored six goals in June, including a hat trick in their victory over Academia SC. Penuna also scored the opening goal in the 2-0 win over Pleasanton Rage to earn Stockton its first ever NorCal Division title and playoff berth.  

M: Lilliah Blum, Utah United – Blum played a key role for Utah United in June, netting two goals for the expansion side. The University of Utah Ute opened the scoring for her side in a 3-1 victory over Colorado Storm and recorded her fifth goal of the season against Flatirons FC on June 26 the Mountain Division Title.  

F: Kelsey Smith, Annapolis Blues FC – The University of Maryland striker was on fire for the Blues in June, scoring four goals to maintain Annapolis’ undefeated season record. Smith scored a hat trick and recorded an assist to lead her team to an 8-0 victory over the Charlottesville Blues in Annapolis’ final match of the regular season.  

F: Seven Castain, Utah United - Utah’s leading goal scorer was named Player of the Month after netting an impressive 10 goals in June to lead the team to the playoffs. Castain had two multi-goal games last month, including a six-goal performance against CISA and a brace over Flatirons FC to clinch a playoff berth.  

Bench: Ginny Lackey (FC Olympia), Abi Hugh (Pittsburg Riveters SC), Finley Schoenbeck (Lonestar SC), Fiona Killian (Long Island Rough Riders), Emily Banashefski (Eagle FC), Aaliyah Faddoul (Sporting JAX), Payton Nutzman (Greenville Liberty SC)
