Established Illinois club expands pre-professional pathway in USL

ROCKFORD, Ill. & TAMPA, Fla. - The United Soccer League announced today that Rockford Raptors FC will join USL League Two and W League for the 2026 season.

Founded in 1994 as a professional team, the Raptors played four seasons in the USL Second Division before moving to the Premier Development League for the 1999 and 2000 seasons. Since ceasing its professional operations, the club has focused on player development and has competed in elite youth competitions at the state and national level.

“We are extremely proud and excited to continue the growth of our club to the level where we will have a team in USL League Two and W League,” said Frank Matheus, Rockford Raptors Director of Coaching. “Joining this prestigious soccer league is not just about competition; it’s an opportunity to elevate our game, connect with passionate fans and players, and strive for greatness on a bigger stage.”

In its three decades, the club has become a staple of youth soccer in Northern Illinois, providing programs for girls and boys from U8 to U19. Fostering a love of the game for its players is a part of the Raptors’ mission, while teaching and instilling teamwork, discipline, creativity, and sportsmanship.

Players are encouraged to help coach younger age groups to gain experience and engage with the larger community. It aims to be a legacy club by welcoming multiple generations of soccer families in Rockford. The Raptors have over 5,000 players involved in their different programs, consistently working with the Rockford Park District to provide free programs and clinics to kids of all ages and backgrounds.

“Becoming a prominent part of the community is what we hope all clubs can accomplish,” said Joel Nash, USL SVP of Pre-Professional Properties. “The Raptors have been instrumental in creating a passionate soccer community that has produced top collegiate and professional talent.”

Rockford has helped launch collegiate and professional careers for many of its alumni. McKaela Schmelzer and Brooke Parnello played together in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, before Schmelzer signed a professional contract in Australia. On the men’s side, former Raptors player Brad Ring played in MLS before making over 100 appearances for USL Championship side Indy Eleven, where fellow alumni Tim Trilk also played after two seasons with Chattanooga Red Wolves SC in USL League One.

The Raptors will play in the Central Conference’s Heartland Division in both League Two and W League.
